In 2016, following a tragic kayak fatality on Lake Michigan, four American Canoe Association L4 Coastal Kayak Instructors (Jeff Adler, John Browning, Sherri Mertz, and Dick Silberman) met to discuss ways in which they might help prevent future incidents on the Great Lakes. With help from several other ACA instructors and committed individuals in the paddle sports industry, the website, PaddleSafely.com, was launched later that year, and a Facebook page was added in 2018. For more information on the PaddleSafely campaign, please stop by the American Canoe Association booth. You can also find several other presentations being offered at Canoecopia by Jeff Adler, John Browning, Sherri Mertz, and Dick Silberman.

 Recreational Kayak Rescue Reality

Pool - Clarion Hotel Sat 1:30pm-1:50pm

Pool - Clarion Hotel Sun 1:30pm-1:50pm

Bicycles are not intended for use on the interstate. Similarly, recreational kayaks are not designed to be used on large bodies of water like the Great Lakes. The group of ACA sea kayak instructors who founded PaddleSafely.com, Jeff Adler, John Browning, Sherri Mertz, and Dick Silberman, will present a realistic demonstration of how recreational kayaks handle in rough water and what to expect following a capsize. This is a "must see" for everyone who paddles recreational kayaks.
