  Kevin Wegner

Raised along the Rock River in Southeast Wisconsin, Kevin's passion for exploring rivers stems from his childhood, marked by memories of wading the Rock River with a fishing pole in hand and leaving his bike nestled in the weeds-a canvas of youthful adventure. Over five decades, Kevin's enduring love has guided him through navigating Wisconsin's waterways and discovering hidden corners of Canada, always accompanied by his trusty fishing pole. Beyond the water's embrace, Kevin finds joy in the simple pleasures of paddling, camping, and fishing-a connection to the great outdoors echoing the carefree days of his youth. Notably, Kevin excelled in the Kruger Waddell Minnesota Border Challenge with a 3-man team in 2022 and 2023, invited by his friend Doug McDonald, an adventurous companion in exploring remote Canadian regions. Another integral fellow paddler and fisherman is Kevin's friend Troy, with whom he has shared paddling and fishing experiences since college. A husband and father of two, Kevin's extensive coaching in baseball and fervent pursuit of Muskie fishing highlight his multifaceted interests. Remarkably, Kevin embraced adventure challenges only in his late 50s, proving that one is never too old to pursue new passions.

BWCA - main floor Sun 10:30am-11:15am
Embark on an extraordinary journey with Kevin, a member of the MNGreene 3-man team, as he recounts the thrilling conquest of the Kruger-Waddell Minnesota Border Challenge—a demanding 270-mile retracing of the historic Voyager route from International Falls, MN, to Grand Portage, MN, on the shores of Lake Superior, involving both paddling and portaging. Despite Kevin’s initial lack of experience, his team achieved the remarkable feat of being the first 3-man team to complete the challenge in each of the past two years. Immerse yourself in the joy, intricate navigation, and critical equipment decisions of this epic odyssey as Kevin unveils the mental and physical challenges they faced, along with the meticulous preparation required. Experience the moonrise, navigate midnight fog, witness the Northern Lights, brave headwinds, and tackle waves on vast lakes and rivers. Shoulder the canoe and packs for the final 9.1-mile portage and discover the unique reality of sleeping in a canoe’s bilge water to keep the team moving. Kevin’s storytelling will shed light on triumphs over challenges, providing a firsthand glimpse into the physical and mental dimensions of this extraordinary adventure. Don’t miss this captivating exploration of resilience and achievement.
